Grant Wood | American Gothic | Acrylic on canvas

Our first project spotlights one of the most familiar paintings in America, depicting a farmer and his daughter in rural Iowa at the dawn of the Great Depression. Many variations on the painting have been created and we’ll be putting our own spin on the 1930s masterpiece.

Vincent Van Gogh | Vase with Carnations | Ceramic painting
Originally a canvas painting by the one and only Van Gogh, we’ll be adapting this moody, floral still life to a ceramic plate that can be hung on display or used in the kitchen.

Alma Thomas | Untitled | Acrylic on canvas
By the time Alma Thomas became a full-time painter in 1960, she was almost 70 years old. She became well known for her masterful use of color and tiled brushstrokes resembling a mosaic. We’ll be practicing our strokes with this painting inspired by planet Earth.

Wassily Kandinsky | Concentric Circles | Clay hand building
In week 4, we’ll be working with clay to create our own colorful version of Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky’s Concentric Circles. First, we’ll mold each shape by hand, then paint them in the colors of your choice! We’ll attach a wire hanger so your finished piece can be hung at home.
